Super obesity

Super obesity is a category within morbid obesity, characterised by presenting a Body Mass Index or BMI of between 50 and 59,9. In terms of weight, it corresponds with some 70 kg over and above the ideal weight.

Associated disorders (comorbidities)

If you suffer from super obesity, you are at extremely high risk of suffering from the same medical complications as those presented in patients with morbid obesity (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiac and coronary disease, sleep apnoea…), although in your case these will be more serious and represent a greater risk to your life.

What’s more, super obese patients can present mobility problems which can seriously affect their everyday activities, such as getting dressed or taking care of their personal hygiene, which adds a significant psychological and social factor to the disease.

Conservative treatments, either dietary or pharmacological, are insufficient for treating any type of morbid obesity. Generally, although the patient may manage to reduce weight, he or she tends to put it back on after the treatment, which is known as the “yo-yo effect”.

The only curative solution in the long term for patients with super obesity is obesity or bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery, as well as avoiding premature death through obesity, cures or notably improves complications (comorbidites) which accompany it, increasing life expectancy and quality of life.
